The Tatuaje Jekyll is the seventh installment in the Tatuaje Monster Series. If you include the two new blends of Chuck and Tiff introduced in the Pudgy Monsters series, it is the ninth Monsters / Little Monsters / Pudgy Monsters blend overall. It was almost exactly a year to the day of this review (Tuesday before Thanksgiving) where Tatuaje Cigars owner Pete Johnson announced on Stogie Geeks that Jekyll and Hyde, the characters from Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” would be forthcoming installments in the Tatuaje Monsters Series.
The interesting thing about this blend is that Pete Johnson uses a Sancti Spiritus wrapper. This is the first Tatuaje blend to use this wrapper. Sancti Spiritus is a Criollo / Pelo d’Oro hybrid that is meant to be a replacement for Pelo d’Oro. It is much more resistant to mold. Previously Johnson had saved this wrapper for blends for blends for his other company, L’Atelier Imports.
Overall the Tatuaje Jekyll started out with notes of pepper, cedar, natural tobacco, and black cherry. There was quite a bit of both sweetness and spice early on, but a chocolate / cream flavor emerged in the first third that smoothed out this cigar and made it quite pleasant. This became the dominant flavor as the cigar progressed. This was a medium strength, medium-bodied smoke, and the construction was excellent.
My big question is how will the Sancti Spiritus wrapper impact aging. Will it age the Tatuaje Jekyll as well as it aged the L’Atelier and L’Atelier Selection Speciale.
Overall this was an excellent addition to the Monsters Series (after last year’s miss with the JV13).
