On Episode 65 of Stogie Geeks, we had Scott Weeks and J.R. Dominguez from Iconic Leaf Cigar Company as our special guests on Stogie Geeks. They discussed their Recluse line, the inaugural blend that was released. The Recluse was released in ten frontmarks. Three of their frontmarks were a unique kayak shaped vitola known as Kanú. We broke the news of the launch of the Kanú vitolas last July. The shape turns out to be so unique that Iconic Leaf copyrighted it and applied for a trademark. The Kanú #1 is the smallest of these kayak-shaped frontmarks.

Normally, I am not a fan of what I term an “artesian” vitola as I prefer a more traditional parejo or classic box-press shape. However the Kanú has outstanding construction. Iconic Leaf’s philosophy is to roll entubado. As a result the cigar had a flawless draw and and excellent burn. The flavors are very classic with this cigar. I found the Kanú had a profile of notes of earth, oak, and pepper. I found a little less in the way of sweetness of the Kanú when compared to the box-press robusto. Overall I found the Kanú to be medium to full in strength and body.

While I still would reach for the robusto or toro first, this is is still a very good option – and worth a box split.
