Stogie Geek Segment: How To Season A Desktop Humidor

Here are some steps:

  1. Using distilled water, wet a sponge (no soap) and wipe the inside of the humidor. The key is to get all the wood on the inside to change color, and stay that color during the process. I had one really dry, and didn’t wet it enough, so the process has to be repeated. Don’t wet it too much,or, well, mold.
  2. Put something inside it to keep the humidity up: A shot glass of distilled water, a wet sponge on top of something plastic, any number of products for seasoning (85% Boveda packs). Install your humdity device as well.
  3. Let it sit for 3-5 days. After this period the hygrometer should still read 85%. Use a quality hygrometer! The ONLY Hygrometer that I trust is a Traceable VWR which you can order directly from VWR (Or if you want to pay a little more, use Amazon which ships it Prime, which means the shipping cost may or may not make Amazon’s price cheaper). What makes it so special? This A serial numbered certificate is provided from an ISO 17025 calibration laboratory accredited by A2LA to indicate instrument traceability to standards provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Monitor also meets CLIA specification 493.1207 for monitoring temperature and humidity.
  4. Then, put all your cigars in. After 24-48 hours, it should be somewhere between 65-72%.
