This cigar was assessed in depth on Cigar Coop.
This was one of the more impressive cigars I saw at the 2014 IPCPR Trade Show. Between the stunning packaging and the fact that the Cohiba (Red Dot) brand has been doing some nice blends, I knew I had to give this cigar a try.
The Cohiba Luxury Selection LS No. 1 uses a special Cameroon wrapper grown by the Meerapfel family called Meerapfel African Gold. The Meerapfels have been growing tobacco in Africa for over five generations. The wrapper itself uses a rare tobacco varietal grown in the African forest of Kadei (which is the second most densely populated forest in the world). The tobacco is then aged five years. The rest of the blend details have not been disclosed, however each leaf in the Cohiba Luxury Selection is rum fermented for a minimum of six months.
Unfortunately this cigar really let me down. This medium strength, medium-bodied cigar had notes of wood, red pepper, lemon, and earth. At times the lemon notes were on the acidic side. The flavors didn’t seem mature, and they just were unimpressive. Add in the 40 dollar price point, and it stung a little more.
I put this one as an Angeler, however this isn’t the type of cigar you want to smoke while doing something else. I’m not sure at this point I could recommend it as a Try One, but I’m curious to see what time does.
