Cubao was originally a line of cigars that was a part of Erik Espinosa and Eddie Ortega’s EO Brands. When the company was dissolved in 2012, Ortega would gain the rights to the Cubao brand. Back in February, we noted a report on Cigar Coop that the Ortega Cubao was making a return with the Sumatra brand. There would be no blend changes – just packaging changes.
It’s been a long time since I smoked a Cubao, so I didn’t really have a baseline to compare this smoking experience. The Cubao starts out with a strong blast of pepper, but once it recedes it is joined by chocolate, natural tobacco, and a nice cherry sweetness. The spice eventually develops some of those nice baker’s spice quality. The spice held until the end, but never got harsh. The flavors are pretty much full-bodied and countered by medium to full strength. Construction is excellent.
The Ortega Cubao is kind of a no-frills, non-flashy cigar. It is a solid smoke and is easily worthy of a fiver.
