I used the “Cigar Year” to run from Thanksgiving 2012 to Thanksgiving 2013. This was a release this December, thus qualifying for my list. This is a cigar that wow’d me early in the year – and even got better.
My selection for the 2013 Cigar of the Year is the La Aurora Cien Años Edición Especial – better known as the La Aurora Cien Años Maduro. This just isn’t a cigar of the year. This isn’t just an Oasis cigar. This is a cigar that will go down as one of the all-time greats. It’s no wonder we put it on our Cigar Mount Rushmore.
This is a limited production offering of only 7,000 cigars that takes La Aurora’s famed Cien Años blend, but puts a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper on it. It was only released as a robusto. This wrapper, combined with the robusto format is as perfect a storm as any.
Not only does the La Aurora Cien Años Edición Especial deliver great flavor, but the flavors work incredibly well together. Along the way I picked up notes of dark chocolate, mocha, leather, cedar, nut, and pepper. This cigar has just enough strength to qualify as a full strength, full-bodied smoke. Over the course of the year, we found that age made it even better. There is an intangible quality to these maduro flavors that leave you wanting more.
As mentioned, no question that this cigar is worthy of our Oasis rating.
