Cigar Coop Review: Viva Republica Edición Limitada Culebra
Show Video: Episode 133
The Viva Republica Edición Limitada Culebrais a most unique culebra in that its three components consist of three distinct blends. In this case, it is made up of the Viva Republica Rapture, Rapture Maduro, and Guerrilla Warfare blends. Each is packaged in an individual coffin.
Culebra is a style of cigars that was started in Cuba that involves typing three “twisted” vitolas together. It is believed this started because rollers in Cuba were limited to taking one cigar home a day and the Culebra was a way to skirt the rules. What is unique about the Viva Republica Edicion Limitada Culebra is that each of the three components will be a different blend – and in this case the blends come from existing Viva Republica core line blends.
Viva Republica Edición Limitada Culebra – Rapture Component
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Havana Vuelta Abajo
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Brazilian, Dominican, Nicaraguan, Peruvian
This delivered notes of wood, sugar cane, and some background sweet notes. There was also a subtle fruit note. A simple, but nice flavor profile. There was a lot of spice toward the end of this. By far this had the most strength and body of the three components – medium to full in the first half and full in the second half. The simplicity was the charm.
Viva Republica Edición Limitada Culebra – Rapture Maduro Component
Wrapper: San Andres Negro
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Brazilian, Dominican, Nicaraguan, Peruvian
Paul Syndrome strikes this component before I light it up as the wrapper peels off slightly. I use some pectin and it does the trick as it burns and draws like there was no problem. From there its a wonderful smoke. Flavor-wise, it is the best of the three components. It has notes of dark chocolate, earth, cedar, a slight citrus flavor, and a mix of black pepper. It’s medium to full for the duration of the cigar.
Viva Republica Edición Limitada Culebra – Guerilla Warfare Component
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra
Binder: Dominican Republic, Mexican (Double)
Filler: Brazilian, Dominican, Nicaraguan
This had the least curvature of the three components and it could be why this burned the best. The burn was literally “set it and forget it”. This cigar has a tangy sweetness and hickory flavor to start. There are also some natural tobacco notes. The tangy and hickory notes subside in the second half. There is more spice toward the end, but it does not become overwhelming. The notes are full-bodied countered by medium to full strength.
Overall Impressions
It was a fun project to smoke. The one drawback is it was hard to distinguish what the actual components actually were. There was some guidance to look at the wrapper colors and going from lightest to darkest the components are: Rapture, Guerilla Warfare, and Rapture Maduro.
Definitely something a stogie geek should smoke. I’d recommend this to a more seasoned cigar enthusiast and to a Viva Republica fan. Each component itself is worth a box split and as a whole the culebra unit is worthy of a box split – normalizing these to 10 count boxes.
