Walking into my shop recently I sought out something both new to market and new to me: The EP Carrillo Pledge from his Perez series of sticks.
Backstory: Pledge joins La Historia and Encore as the third in the Perez- Esteli cigar series. Pledge got its name from stogie lovers at the 2019 Big Smoke in Vegas. Ballots were given with the names Bequest, Pledge, and Prequel to choose from. The people spoke, and Pledge it was!
Appearance: The Connecticut Havana seed dark wrapper (yes I said CT and dark in same sentence) really pops against the very royal looking gold and blue wrapper. This stick is box pressed and comes in 2 sizes 5×50 Robusto and a 6×52 Toro (for this review). This is a good looking stogie I would approach in a crowded humidor. Great outfit and oily skin and …..family show…moving on.

Notes: An oak, dark chocolate hit my pallet on the cold draw. Got me very excited to cut and light. The first third was very peppery which was expected based on Ernesto’s comments on the stick. I didn’t get much else. The pepper dropped slightly (I mean slightly) on the 2nd third and I had mild milk chocolate hints on the retro-hale. The finish brought more black pepper. I smoked this thing to the nub and have to say it was black pepper throughout. Not my thing but if you like the pepper notes this one is for you.

Experience: I’m a big fan of box pressed so as far as mouth feel and hand control this was a great cigar. Has a beautiful triple cap and it burned really well with minimal issues (had one touch up). Smoke production was great. A nice crisp white smoked was bellowing out of the vote and I enjoyed all of it. Smoke time was 85 minutes.

At $12 I thought this was a fair price. I would recommend this to others who like stronger notes in their stogies. This cigar is a great value.
