Robusto: 5 x 52 (Tapered Foot)
Price: $11.00
The cigar was assessed in depth on Cigar Coop.
The Viaje Zombie is one of the most limited releases by small batch producer Viaje Cigars. Typically this one time annual release has gone to no more than 4 retailers. With Viaje recently announcing the 2014 Zombie, I decided to go back and smoke one of the 2013 releases.
2013 marked a big change. Viaje President Andre Farkas changed the double capped robusto that was used for the 2011 and 2012 releases into the the tapered end robusto. There were two blends released – one called “Black Box” and one called “Natural Box”. The “Black Box” blend is the original one and constant throughout the 4 years of the Zombie series.
This cigar is going to have note of coffee, chocolate, earth, and black pepper. I also picked up a floral note early on. I did find the last third of this to be spicy, and there was a little harshness on the “back nine”. While the flavors were still full-bodied, I found the strength dialed back slightly with a year of age to medium to full.
The burn had a slight case of “Paul Syndrome” as it required more work in the middle third. This cigar still delivered some great flavors and seems to have aged well. It’s worth a box split (which I actually did).
